Lunch report: India 9/2 after conceding lead of 338

Starting the day with a lead of 237 runs and three wickets in hand, England would have looked to extend their lead quickly but in the first hour of play on Sunday, England hyper-extended their lead to 338 by scoring 98 in just 11 overs. In reply, India lose their openers to slump to 9 f0r 2 just as rain forced an early lunch at The Oval. Murali Vijay (2) departed to James Anderson in the fifth over and Gautam Gamhbir's wholly unconvincing innings of 3 ended in a run out.

England had earlier finished their first innings at 486 with Joe Root remaining unbeaten on 149, helped by some wayward bowling from Ishant Sharma and Varun Aaron first up in the morning. Ishant conceded 42 runs in six overs, during which he gave Root a reprieve when he overstepped, while Aaron gave up 42 in four.

Ishant's day started well when he got Chris Jordan out in the third over, but in walked Stuart Broad to make a mockery of India's tactics. The idea was to bowl short to him, but neither Ishant or Aaron really hit the right lengths and neither were they able to extract enough bounce to trouble Broad. Under a new helmet after his nose was broken by Aaron at Old Trafford, Broad played some cracking shots as he sped to 37 off 21 balls courtesy five fours and a six before Ishant finally got him fending a short ball. However, there was doubt as to whether the left-hander's hand was on the bat handle as the snorter passed him.

Root, meanwhile, continued to time the ball well and hurried to his fifth Test hundred and then accelerated by scoring 47 runs in just 27 balls. Ravichandran Ashwin gave away three fours in his first over before he took the last wicket of James Anderson for one.
