End political reservation for SCs, says Ambedkar’s grandson Prakash
Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s grandson Prakash Ambedkar has suggested the abolition of political reservation for the Scheduled Castes (SCs) “as the people have started voting for Dalit candidates in elections without any bias.”
Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Ambedkar who heads the Bharip Bahujan Mahasangh (BBM), said, “Political reservation should be done away with because voting for a Dalit candidate is not a big issue now. But educational and services reservation should stay as Dalits still face social discrimination.”
Mr. Ambedkar’s party has allied with the CPI, the CPI(M) and the Peasants and Worker’s Party (PWP) and has put up candidates in 66 seats across Maharashtra.
Mr. Ambedkar said: “There was an intellectual class along with Dr. Ambedkar and even after him. That class joined the service sector and got stabilised. So what was left was a class which made politics their main agenda, but didn’t have the guts like the older generation to play independent politics. We now have the fourth generation, inclining towards independent politics, which is a good sign.”
The lot of the Dalits was improving. “A thin transformation from community atrocities to individual atrocities has occurred, which is a big change. Over a period of time even these individual atrocities will end.”
Denying the Bahujan Samaj Party as a phase of Dalit movement, he said, “Maharashtra has 13 percent Dalit population which is not a winning vote percentage. A Dalit leader here has to take other groups along with him. In UP, the Dalit politics starts with 24 percent vote share and ends at 32 percent which is a winning equation.”
Mr.Ambedkar is a relative of Milind Teltumbde, the central committee member of the CPI (Maoist). He is also one of the few political leaders who openly support the Maoist movement.
“In 70s the Maoist movement was against Zamindari, now it’s against exploitation of Tribals by the corporates. It is the only movement in the country which treats the natural resources as an asset of the nation,” he contended adding that he did not subscribe to the “indiscriminate violence.”
Speaking about divisions among the Dalits, he said, “The non-converted (Hindu) believe in religious politics and support Shiv Sena–BJP whereas the converted (Buddhist) Dalits align with organizations which don’t have a religious agenda.”
He denied presence of “Modi wave” during the Lok Sabha elections and said that Dalits voting for the BJP during general elections should not be taken as a benchmark.
“The voting was against the Congress because of its misrule. Thus whoever found whichever platform they clinched on it to defeat Congress,” Mr. Ambedkar said.

Kashmir: Civilians flee as border clashes continue
Hundreds of villagers are fleeing their homes in Indian-administered Kashmir as Indian and Pakistani troops continue to exchange fire in some of the worst violence in the region in a decade.
At least 16 people have been killed since violence began last Friday - nine of them Pakistani and seven Indian.
Both sides have accused each other of starting the hostilities.
A ceasefire agreed in 2003 remains in place, but the neighbours often accuse each other of violating it.
The latest round of hostilities come just months after India's new Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif to his inauguration.
But relations have deteriorated since then.
In August, India cancelled talks with Pakistan after accusing it of interfering in its internal affairs.
And last month, Mr Modi, in his first speech at the UN, said he wanted peace talks with Pakistan but insisted it must create an "appropriate atmosphere".
The village of Mahashay Kothe in Arnia resembles a ghost town.
The narrow mud lanes are empty, the houses abandoned. Only some cattle and a couple of dogs remain.
The roof of one of the houses has shattered under the impact of a mortar shell. The yellow walls are pockmarked with shrapnel.
Four members of a family were killed here. They were sleeping out in the open when the village came under fire.
"One person died instantly," one of the neighbours tell me. "I could hear a woman crying out for help. But by the time it arrived, she too had died."
The village is right on the border - Pakistan just a kilometre away and visible from this side.
On Wednesday, Indian officials said at least two people, including a woman, had been killed and 20 others - including three soldiers - injured by gunfire and mortar bombs from the Pakistani side.
Some 1,500 people had fled their homes along the disputed border to shelters, they added.
"It's a voluntary thing. Otherwise the entire border population is vulnerable," Shantmanu, a senior official in Indian-administered Kashmir, told AFP news agency.
Reports said many had taken shelter in schools, while some had moved into army bunkers.
A villager in the affected Arnia area in Jammu said she had no idea when she would be able to leave the shelter.
"Is there no end to it? When will we return to our homes? Our cattle, our only source of income, will die unattended," Rano Devi told the Hindustan Times newspaper.
Home Minister Rajnath Singh said India would "not tolerate such acts of border violations by Pakistan" and that "ceasefire violations must stop".
Pakistani officials said at least three people were killed and four others were injured in Sialkot when they were hit by shells fired by Indian forces late on Tuesday.
AFP quoted a reporter in the area as saying that intermittent firing was continuing and many residents had fled their homes.
Kashmir, claimed by both countries in its entirety, has been a flashpoint for more than 60 years and the South Asian rivals have fought two wars and a limited conflict over the region. If you share this news in twitter send your tweets. comments your tweets i will publish in my news.

Govt says to look into traders' concerns on Flipkart sale
After receiving "many complaints" fromtraders on Flipkart's massive discount sale,
government on Wednesday said it will look
into the concerns and take a call on whether
moreclarity is required on e-commerce retail
business. Flipkart's 'Big Billion Day' sale on Monday,
that offered steep discounts on various products, has raised concerns among small and big
traders that such campaigns would badly affect players in the traditional retail market. "We
have received many inputs. Lot of concerns have been expressed. We will look into it,"
Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman told reporters here. When asked whether
the government is considering any particular policy for e-commerce retailing, she said the
matter would be looked into. "Now there are many complaints. We will study the matter..
. Whether there is a need for a separate policy or some kind of clarification is needed, we will
make it clear soon," Sitharaman, who is also the Minister of State for Finance and Corporate
Affairs, said. In recent times, many e-commerce portals have been coming out with steep
discount sales. Flipkart has said that its 'Big Bilion Day' sale saw 1.5 million people shopping
at its portal. It also claimed that products worth over Rs 600 crore were sold in just 10 hours
under the scheme. Earlier this week, traders body CAIT had demanded the Commerce and
Industry Ministry take steps to monitor and regulate online businesses. The Confederation of All
India Traders has also sought a probe into the business model and trade practices of e-
commerce companies to find out how they are offering huge discounts during the ongoing
festive season. To a query related to Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) announcement, Sitharaman
said that it will come "soon". "
The new policy would be different from the previous ones. It will focus on lot many things," she said. FTP deals with matters related to exports and imports.
